Steps to Equity

In 2020, The Muldoon Center for Entrepreneurship at John Carroll University engaged Art x Love to support “new programs and projects that empower children and residents to build a stronger, more connected community.” We worked with residents and students from Cleveland’s Buckeye-Shaker and Woodland Hills neighborhoods to research the area, identify areas for improvement, and partner with local organizations and stakeholders to improve quality of life in the area.

Our work began with a Buckeye-Shaker GIS walkability assessment. Residents and students walked every sidewalk in the neighborhood and assessed the condition of roadways, sidewalks, structures, greenery, littler, visibility, perception of safety, and mapped ideas for improvement.

Based on our findings and ongoing conversations with residents, Art x Love produced The Village Activity Book, a free 16-page all-ages educational and participatory design tool designed to help residents share their vision for the future. More than 3,000 copies were distributed across Buckeye-Shaker and Woodland Hills. We received hundreds of submissions and thousands of responses were collected, analyzed, and shared with local stakeholders and leaders to guide and inform future planning.

The data these projects collected proved a valuable resource for Buckeye-Shaker and Woodland Hills residents, as well as local stakeholders and leaders. We were able to refer residents to funding opportunities, inform city planning projects, connect like-minded neighborhood ambassadors, and build stronger community connections.

In 2022, LANDstudio engaged us with an urgent public art opportunity to leverage our findings as a creative extension of the We Wear the Mask project. We met with local artists from the project, developed public art concepts based on the community’s activity book submissions, returned to the streets to test the concepts with residents, successfully pitched our project to the City of Cleveland’s art commission, and worked with Burten, Bell, Carr Development Inc. to produce and install the ARISE/ASPIRE mural on the corner of E. 120th St. & Buckeye Road.

In 2023, the Cleveland Public Library engaged us to produce a collaborative community mural for the Rice Branch Library based on submissions from the The Village Activity Book. John Carroll University generously offered to fund the project as a part of their continuing investment and service to the community.

The map of Buckeye-Shaker and Woodland Hills that appeared on the cover The Village Activity Book was selected as the preferred concept for development. A day was organized for the community to come out and paint, and more than 75 residents of all ages showed up and made their mark. Over the next several weeks, Mac continued painting and adding library patron’s words of affirmation to the mural. The final piece was titled Land of OpportUNITY and serves as both an inspiring point of pride for the community and wayfinding resource.

John Carroll University is committed to providing its students with meaningful learning experiences that take an equitable approach to community building, and is making a long-term investment to support the Ward 6 area with a focus on the Woodland Hills and Buckeye-Shaker neighborhoods on the east side of Cleveland. These projects are strategically designed to raise awareness of community assets and liabilities, and to help organizations align with residents toward an equitable, inclusive, and enduring vision for the community with real collaboration and meaningful investment.

Art x Love is delighted to continue this partnership to collaborate with residents and local organizations to support equitable, sustainable, and meaningful change for the people of Buckeye-Shaker and Woodland Hills.

@PLAY Akron

In 2017, Art x Love was awarded a $240,000 Knight Cities grant for @PLAY Akron, an 18-month, 24-neighborhood, interactive art project designed to bring diverse people together and encourage deeper community connections. Our team walked and biked every street in the city, conducted thousands of street intercept interviews with residents and stakeholders, and produced more than 100 murals and 50 placemaking transformations across the city.

@PLAY Akron has inspired millions of dollars of new investment and systemic change across the City of Akron, and fundamentally changed the way local organizations and non-profits approach neighborhood research, community engagement, and creative collaboration.

Akron Speaks

Shammas Malik is running for Mayor of Akron, and we are excited and encouraged by his style of leadership, vision for the future, and plans for the city.

To support the campaign, we developed the worksheets and brochure for Akron Speaks – a series of community conversations inspired by the World Café method for simple, effective, and flexible group dialogue. Four events were organized in each geographic region of Akron, and dedicated to the core issues facing Akron. Dozens of residents attended, sharing their voice and vision for an informed and better future for the city.

The worksheets and brochure give people a flexible and safe space to share their thoughts, insights, and vision for the future – regardless of whether they could attend.

Thousands of insights and ideas have been collected from residents, all of whose voices and vision are informing Shammas’ campaign. Together, we can be the change that Akron needs!

Norwell Street Park

In 2022, we produced the Norwell Street Park Activity Booklet to source ideas from the community and enhance participatory design of this new park in Boston (MA). Art x Love was able to produce the booklet in one week, including several rapid rounds of refinement to copy and design, optimizing opportunities for community collaboration and input.

Buckeye-Shaker GIS

Charting a course for systemic change.

Art x Love taught students and residents geospatial analysis (ArcGIS) and mapped every sidewalk and intersection in Cleveland’s Buckeye-Shaker neighborhood. We assessed the condition of roadways, sidewalks, structures, greenery, litter, visibility, perception of safety, and pinpointed ideas for improvement. This data has mobilized residents, guided new partnerships, and is informing transformational investments.

Steps to Equity was selected as the opening presentation on Equity & Social Justice at the 2022 Esri User Conference in San Diego, CA.

The Village Activity Book

Educating, informing, and inspiring a community.

In 2020, The Muldoon Center for Entrepreneurship at John Carroll University received a $50,000 Verizon grant to support “new programs and projects that empower children and residents to build a stronger, more connected community.” Art x Love was engaged to produce two projects in collaboration with neighborhood residents and John Carroll University students. First we completed the Steps to Equity GIS walkability assessment of Buckeye-Shaker, and then we leveraged those insights to create The Village Activity Book.

3,000 copies of The Village Activity Book were distributed across the neighborhoods of Buckeye-Shaker and Woodland Hills. Hundreds of submissions were received, scanned, analyzed, and are now inspiring and informing new community initiatives and neighborhood investment.

Rockefeller Park Field Guide

In 2020, Art x Love was engaged by University Circle to create The Rockefeller Park Field Guide, an 8-page activity book that focuses on Cleveland’s Cultural Gardens. The book includes a mix of educational content, maps of the park, and participatory design exercises for residents and visitors alike.

To create the activity book, our team toured the park by foot, bike, and car. We also interviewed residents and local stakeholders to understand key equities and opportunities for learning.

The Rockefeller Park Field Guide has been a key part of local community collaborative events with University Circle and Recess Cleveland, encouraging playful exploration of The Cultural Gardens while inspiring new ideas for future park improvements.

Stewart's Caring Place

Stewart’s Caring Place provides free cancer support services for individuals and families. Art x Love was engaged to develop the Art Plan for Stewart’s new Cancer Wellness Center in Fairlawn, Ohio. We developed a menu of local artists for consideration, then commissioned and oversaw development and installation of the select artist’s work.

Stewart’s Caring Place radiates with a healthy spirit of creativity, compassion, and community. Art x Love commissioned and purchased artwork by Kimmy Henderson and Leah Rzepka, and produced signature holographic paintings throughout the space, including the custom-designed donor wall.

We are delighted to support Stewart’s Caring Place, and look forward to developing more opportunities to encourage and inspire healing and communication through the arts. That work continues today with our management and curation of the Stewart’s Healing Arts Gallery, showcasing local artist’s work with 100% of the proceeds from art sales going to the artists. Parks Unlimited

The Trust for Public Land engaged Art x Love to create a community activity book that could inspire and inform development of the new Clark Avenue Park in Cleveland’s Clark-Fulton neighborhood.

This project launched at the start of 2020’s COVID-19 pandemic, and was intentionally designed to safely engage residents of all ages and provide opportunities for community expression, connection, and learning through participatory design.

We walked dozens of streets throughout the neighborhood and surrounding areas, and interviewed residents along the way to understand the specific challenges, experiences, and opportunities they would like to see addressed. This feedback was baked into every page of the Parks Unlimited Activity Book to provide residents with an authentic platform to express themselves and share their aspirations for the future. Art x Love also worked with local leaders and community organizations to develop a plan for the safe distribution and collection of activity books across the neighborhood.

The Parks Unlimited Activity Book is free and available to download in English, Spanish, French, and Arabic. Participants had a chance to win numerous prizes including a computer, iPad, basketballs, activity buckets, games, and more. At least one lucky winner will also see their vision come to life in the form of a public art installation or placemaking transformation.

Buffalo Unlimited

Art x Love toured 24 parks in Buffalo, New York, interviewed dozens of residents, and collaborated with local leaders and The Trust for Public Land to create the 16-page Buffalo Unlimited Activity Book for the Buffalo Parks Plan. The book features a mix of educational, creative, and participatory design exercises that are designed to inspire, inform, and guide Buffalo Parks development.

The Buffalo Unlimited Activity Book is available in English, Spanish, and Arabic and is free and for all ages. Buffalo resident submissions received by April 3, 2021, will be automatically entered into a lottery for a chance to win a range of prizes that include smart watches, a Chromebook, local business gifts cards, sporting goods, and much more. Please visit the Official Rules and take the Buffalo Parks Master Plan Survey to help shape the future of Buffalo Parks.

The Buffalo Parks Master Plan is a project of The City of Buffalo’s Division of Parks & Recreation and the Office of Strategic Planning. The Trust for Public Land is leading the project and is working with local design and planning firms New City Parks and the Regional Plan Association. Representatives of local agencies and community groups are guiding the process as members of a steering committee. The Buffalo Parks Plan is being carried out from January 2020 through June 2021. This effort was made possible through the generous support of Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation.

University Park GIS

Art x Love partnered with volunteers from the University of Akron’s Engineering Services Design Team (ESDT) to create a daytime & nighttime Walkability Assessment of Akron’s University Park neighborhood using a geographic information system (GIS). The team walked every intersection of the neighborhood at day and night, and used the Survey123 application on their mobile phones to log walkability data about roadways, sidewalks, litter, greenery, structures, visibility, and perception of safety.

The data was compiled and analyzed to provide targeted insights and recommendations to improve walkability and neighborhood perception. The team shared its findings with the City of Akron’s GIS & Cartography department, City Arborist, and members of the Office of Integrated Development.

Through Art x Love’s @PLAY GIS process, University students reported a greater appreciation for the diversity and quality of the neighborhood. An executive summary of the team’s findings, including specific reports on key features can be provided upon request.

Play for All

WWBD Consulting brought us in to help with research, strategy, and design for the Stow City Center: Play for All Project.

We provided strategic considerations for research, and helped lead development and implementation of a Community Visioning Day to coincide with Stow’s annual Pizza Palooza community event.

Research was designed to be highly accessible and interactive, and focussed on community feedback and ideas for Stow City Center’s Playground, Splash Pad, Amenities, and Activities.

Community input was segmented between kids, teens, adults, and seniors to gain strategic insight toward specific priorities and preferences among each age group.

Research leveraged key insights and learnings to catalyze the community and help City leaders and residents align on a plan to support and realize long-term vision for Stow City Center.
