Monday
Mac started painting Monday in 2005 and completed the piece in 2008. It is part of his Umbrella Series of paintings. This oil painting on canvas depicts an umbrella emerging from a dark alley into a flooded city street. Other paintings from the series depict a similar scene, but with hundreds of umbrellas in a ballet bobbing and dancing through the flooded streets.
When Mac created this piece, he was feeling very alone and saw it as a reflection about stepping out and the challenge of facing difficult circumstances on your own. Years later, he found the piece to be “almost heavenly.” Monday is in a private family collection in Singapore.
