Last Sunday

Art

Last Sunday was painted in 2003-2004 and represents a continuation of Mac’s Umbrella Series of paintings, which began in 1999 as an exploration of subjective interpretation, self-illumination, and existential meaning. Mac created a hypothetical world called “Ible Invi” to house and explore these concepts across a range of paintings, sculptures, installations, and performances.

Last Sunday depicts a flooded cityscape, bleached in light and darkness, with an apocalyptic column of fire rising in the distance. A ballet of umbrellas float playfully in the streets. The painting invites viewers to consider the meaning and morality of civilization, capitalism, and faith.

Last Sunday was part of Mac Love’s Master of Fine Art thesis exhibition at The Edinburgh College of Art, in 2005. It was later displayed at The Outhouse, a restaurant and nightclub in Edinburgh’s City Center. Its currently part of a private collection in Scotland.
